First and foremost, before I begin this post, I would like to personally thank Covergirl for FINALLY seeing the light.
Sure you’ve had Lana Ogilvie, Tyra Banks, Brandy, and even Rihanna as your spokesmodels in the past. But you’ve yet to have Ms. Monae or anyone else remotely like her representing your brand.
Kudos to a very intelligent choice for mast marketing and for making your voice in the fashion/make-up industry, that much more louder! You have so many young ladies around the world already listening.
Now to the Star of the Show!
Janelle Monáe Robinson. Where does one begin with you?
You are an artistic-light from Kansas City, Kansas, born in the sober-chill of December.
From Kansas to New York, to Philadelphia and back again; all the while pursuing your childhood aspiration of becoming a singer and performer. Attending the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in NY and Freedom Theatre’s performing arts academy in Philadelphia, inching closer and closer to the motivational woman you are today.
Two record labels and three albums later you are all over the place! From retro and futuristic audio played on sound-waves across the States, to your neo-soul tunes tampering with the redundant and over-played songs that, thanks you to you, will soon be go out of style. And ultimately becoming a voice for not only African American women in every corner of this world, but for ALL women, youngest to elder, of EVERY race. Helping to encourage us that we are beautiful. That our voice, united, strong and in sync, riot resoundingly in comparison to society’s.
You are not only a Naturalista and a funky Fashionista, who’s style is complimentary to who you are, but you are now a Covergirl!
New face and model of Madewell, quite the songstress and Naturalista herself, Solange, had these words to tweet to Ms. Janelle:
And let me say: The essence of the woman you are will shine through those colorfully printed ads, commercials, and pages. (In Vogue Magazine’s September issue, you can flip through and find Monae’s 10 page Cover Girl advertising spread where she looks absolutely gorgeous!)
During her interview with Vogue she talked about reaching out to young women through being a Cover Girl,
“Growing up and trying to find myself as a woman and experimenting with makeup, I’d go buy magazines. I’d see Tyra Banks [in the CoverGirl ads] and I’d think, Wow, she’s beautiful. It never looked like she had on too much makeup. There was just something clean and classic about her face.”
“I believe in the idea of every woman finding their own beauty superpowers. I want to help redefine what it means to be a strong woman in the music and fashion worlds.”
Credit to August-Skin for providing these 5 key things to know about our starlet:
1) Her vocals round out “We are Young,” the power ballad that kickstarted the summer.
2) She began singing as a child with her grandmothers, who both played the organ.
3) Her must-have beauty tool is an eyebrow brush.
4) Monae doesn’t ever plan to stray from her signature tuxedo, noting that the stark black and white suit is a tailored, timeless look that commands attention.
5) When she’s not wearing CoverGirl cosmetics, she uses fresh raspberries for blush, and dark cherries to stain her lips.
